Pure lead is the starting point of the lead-acid battery. High-purity refined lead is used to make battery oxide, to cast grids in some designs, and for straps, posts and terminals.

Impurities in lead affect gassing, self-discharge and battery life, so purity is controlled and certified for every lot.
