Waldies is one of the largest manufacturers of lead oxides in India. Our Griffin® range covers red lead, grey battery oxide and yellow lead (litharge), made at our Konnagar works on the Hooghly.
Lead oxides are the working chemistry of the lead-acid battery and an essential raw material for specialty glass, ceramics, PVC stabilizers and cable compounds. Waldies has produced them for well over a century, and the Griffin® name is known to battery and compound makers across India.
Every batch is tested in our works laboratory before dispatch, and each consignment ships with a certificate of analysis. Grades can be tuned for particle size, reactivity and free-lead content to suit your process.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between red lead and litharge?
Litharge (yellow lead) is lead monoxide, PbO. Red lead, or minium, is Pb₃O₄, a mixed-valence oxide made by further oxidising litharge. Red lead is used mainly in battery plates, glass and ceramics; litharge is a raw material for glass, ceramics and lead-based PVC stabilizers.
What is grey oxide used for?
Grey oxide, also called battery oxide or leady oxide, is a partly oxidised lead powder that is mixed into the paste for lead-acid battery plates. Its free-lead content and particle size affect paste behaviour and battery performance.
