Red lead
Pb₃O₄
Pb₃O₄ for battery plates, glass, ceramics and shielding. Red lead, also called minium or lead tetroxide, is Pb₃O₄.
Lead oxide (PbO) · litharge, tetragonal · live structure
Red lead, also called minium or lead tetroxide, is Pb₃O₄. It is made by roasting litharge in air under controlled conditions until it takes up more oxygen, giving the bright orange-red powder.
In lead-acid batteries, red lead is added to the positive paste to speed up formation and improve early capacity. It is also used in specialty and crystal glass, ceramic glazes and radiation-shielding products.
