Waldies is proud to share our results in the 88th Merchants Cup Regatta, held by the Calcutta Rowing Club. Our crew secured second position in the main event this year.
The Calcutta Rowing Club organises the Merchants Cup Regatta every year to promote rowing among Kolkata's corporate houses. Crews from across the city take part, with companies such as HSBC, HDFC, Gillanders and Tata among regular participants.
Waldies (previously Gillanders) took part in every format of the event: dinghy, ergometer, coxed fours and tub pairs. The three-day regatta concluded on 29 July, with Palazzo Marbles named overall champions of the 88th season.
The first Merchants' Cup Regatta was not held on Rabindra Sarobar, which did not yet exist, but on the Club's former course on the Boat Canal near Majerhat Bridge in Behala. It was won by a crew from George Henderson & Company.
Although Gillanders donated the trophy, the company could not claim it until 1948. Macneill & Magor won it five years running, and Gillanders won again in 1980 and 1981. Chloride India Ltd (now Exide) took the cup in 1982, Tata Iron & Steel Co. in 1983, and M.N.C. in 1984–85. Tata won it back in 1986, 1988, 1989 and 1990.
